Tremendous Trails 4: All-in-One at Wendelstein

In celebration of the relaunch of GipfelReisen.de I will post seven of my most favorite hiking videos for the coming week.

You feel for a mountain experience but hiking alone is not what you seek? Or you want to have the wind of the high alpines without having to walk up 1000 metres in height? Here is a nice combination trip do-able from Munich by train by everyone:

First you take the train to „Brannenburg“ which is roughly 1 hours from Munich. From the train station you can already see the mountains (0:00) and instead of walking up, it’s a walk *to* the mountains at first. You just follow signs to „Wendelsteinbahn“, the oldest working rack railway in Bavaria. After 30 minutes, you’ll reach the loading area and be ready to board! Considering that construction began in 1910, the route it takes is completely ridiculous and fascinating at the same time (0:15). The rack railway will bring you up approx. 1000 more metres close to the „Wendelstein“ (1:10).

Yes, it’s pure tourism, yet it still has to offer something for everyone. Besides a restaurant (1:20), it also has a spectacular trail around the mountain summit which is not that exhausting as well (1:40). Just don’t expect to be there alone anytime of there year. Don’t miss to do the whole trip around the mountain for a little more private time (3:30) as most people take the same way back they came when they reached the top. If you’re newbee, watch your step at the more steeper parts of the trail. It’ll also leads you towards a large cave. Visting is recommended (3:50)!

After all that impressions, it’s time to continue. And as you already experiences a rack railway, a high mountain top, trails and a cave, it’s time for a cableway! Luckily, there is also a cableway still in operation (3:55). This one will lead you to the other side of the mountain with a Kneipp basin where you can bring your feet into perfect conditions again. How to get back from there? No problem: Another train station with trains to munich is just around the corner.
