Log Driving in Munich

Log driving has a long history on the river Isar: From the 13th to the 19th century a lot of people and goods were transported on large rafts on the river from and to Munich. Since several years, this way of transport became more popular again as a tourist attraction within the city of Munich.

Another tradition of Munich people is to go to the Isar quite about every time when there is sunshine. It’s a pretty convenient way for recreation as the river is reachable within minutes from most places in the city. So do I. Yesterday, there were dozends of log drivers on the river – i’ve never seen this much. There were about one large raft every 100 meteres. These rafts are pretty large:

Most people stay a whole day on it, do BBQs on board or go swimming besides the boatI also happened to have my camera mounted on my bike for some testing shots. So here is a video where you can see (very vaguely) the rafts on the river while I was riding my bike (Minute 1:15-2:30 onwards on the left side). The amount of rafts was so large, that even when I came back to the river after 3 hours, the first thing I saw was a raft. 😉
