Finally, I own the ‚When They Cry‘ Season 1 BoxSet

DVDVerdict.com has said to the boxset:

Any quibbles I have with When They Cry are trivial. It may be depressing, violent, and exceptionally dark, but this series features some of the best writing I’ve seen in an anime.

Well, you’re just god damn right there. Incredible how such a small group could create such a creative computer game (or visual novel, if you will) and then even be able to transport them into an even greater motion picture. If western companies would just focus on such stories as well – be it in games or movies. In Japan, it seems just normal to use your „game“ designs for entering into the motion picture screen writing: Create your own world by using common authoring tools, keep the total control over your creation, storylines and characters,  then even market it on your own – and if it gets popular, just port it 1:1 to a flick – by using your „game“ as screenplay. And when I say screenplay, I mean screenplay. The game becomes the design bible and not just another screenwriter or producer. Would be great to have the visual novel genre established here as well – besides just Phoenix Wright. Anyway, happy to finally put these great, great DVDs into my shelf. They’re worth every penny. Just like the sequels. Woohaa!
